Chapter 1 · Historical Setting & Divine Birth (1457 VS)

1. The Royal Era & The Incarnation of Jit Mal1.

Around 600 years ago, in Vikram Samvat 1457 (circa 1400 CE), the kingdom of Jammu was ruled by the valiant Raja Hameer Dev Ji (son of Jambupati Raja Maldev Ji). In Delhi, Sultan Mubarak Shah held sway. Recognizing Hameer Dev's extraordinary martial prowess akin to Bhimsen, Mubarak Shah honored him with the title Bhimdev and granted him suzerainty over 22 hill states (11 east of river Ravi including Kangra, Mandi, Suket, Kullu, Nurpur, Guler; and 11 west of Ravi including Jambupur, Lakhanpur, Mankot, Kathua, Chamba, Jasrota).

Along the banks of the Chandra-Bhaga (Chenab) river, near Reasi and 4 miles from Katra, nestled the serene village of Agharkot (Aghar Jitto / Aghar Kot). Here lived a pious, truthful, and ascetic Brahmin of the Makhotra lineage named Shri Roop Chand Ji and his devout wife Mata Jojla (Jajan / Jaajaan).

Despite extensive pilgrimages across India (from Haridwar, Ayodhya, and Kashi to Rameswaram, Dwarka, and Badrinath), the couple remained childless. Mata Jajan immersed herself in relentless worship at the village Shivalaya. Misled by the vicious gossip of envious villagers, Roop Chand arrived at the temple armed with a dagger (katar) intending to kill his wife. Suddenly, Lord Shiva manifested, stayed his hand, and delivered a divine boon:

Lord Shiva's Prophecy: "From your wife's womb shall take birth a divine child—an ansh of Shiva and revered among the 84 Siddhas as Mednipath Siddha (the saint who sanctifies agriculture). In his past life, he was Shri Chand, the royal priest (kul-purohit) of Guga Peer (Raja Mandlik). Name this boy Jitmal. He will be a supreme devotee of Vaishnavi Durga, who will herself be born in his home. But remember: the very dagger you brought to slay your wife shall become the instrument of your son's mortal demise."

On the sacred night of Kartik Purnima, Vikram Samvat 1457, under auspicious planetary alignments, baby Jitmal was born. At age 8, when Guga Peer (Raja Mandlik) dropped his heavy 1.25-maund whip, Jitmal picked it up with a single hand like a dry straw; Guga Peer recognized his past-life priest and played chaupad with him nightly in secret. Jitmal received his Yajnopavita at age 9, studied sacred scriptures until 16, and married the virtuous Ichhra Devi.

Chapter 2 · The Divine Boon of Vaishnavi (1482 VS)

2. The Manifestation of Dasham Shakti Bua Kodi2.

Following his parents' demise, Jitmal lived a life of rigorous devotion. Every single dawn, he walked 7 kos into the Trikuta mountains to the Holy Cave of Mata Vaishno Devi, bathed in Charan Ganga, recited the Durga Saptashati, worshipped his Shaligram, and farmed to earn an honest living.

One morning at the cave entrance, Jitmal beheld nine celestial maidens playing with dolls and a ball (khinnu). One radiant maiden captivated his soul. Mata Vaishno Devi revealed her four-armed (Chaturbhuja) divine form and offered him any worldly boon. Jitmal humbly replied that he desired no worldly riches—only to perpetually behold her enchanting childhood divine play.

The Goddess's Sacred Promise: Mata Vaishno Devi granted that she would take birth as his daughter for exactly 5 years. She foretold that upon her birth, his wife Ichhra Devi would attain Moksha. The girl must be named Bua Kodi and nurtured exclusively on the milk of a sacred Kapila cow. Furthermore, to spare Jitmal the agonizing pain of giving away his divine child in worldly marriage (kanyadaan), she promised:"When you cast off your mortal frame through the instrument of that fateful dagger, I shall instantly consume my mortal body in yogic fire and join you in the eternal realm."

In Vikram Samvat 1482 (circa 1425 CE), on Sunday the sixth day of the waxing moon in the month of Magha, Bua Kodi Ji manifested in Agharkot. Simultaneously, Mata Ichhra Devi peacefully departed for the heavenly abode, having fulfilled her earthly role.

Chapter 3 · Family Strife & The Migration (1486 VS)

3. Envy of Kinfolk & The Journey to the Plains3.

As young Bua Kodi grew up in Agharkot, miraculous events began unfolding daily around the household. However, Jitmal's first cousins—Iso, Jojo, and Rullo (sons of his father's brother)—burned with bitter resentment and greed. Coveting Jitmal's fertile ancestral lands, they plotted relentlessly to drive him out of the village.

Iso, Jojo, and Rullo refused to share water channels, damaged his crops, and hurled relentless abuses at him. Recognizing that greed had blinded his kinfolk and unwilling to spill family blood over mundane soil, Jitmal packed his meager worldly belongings onto a bullock cart. With 4-year-old Bua Kodi, his devout Kapila cow, and his loyal nephew (sister's son) Iso Megh, Jitmal turned his back on his beloved Agharkot in Vikram Samvat 1486 and descended into the Jammu plains.

Chapter 4 · The Covenant at Shamhan (1486 VS)

4. The Barren Soil of Shamhan & The Solemn Pact4.

Wandering southwards, Jitmal arrived at the hamlet of Kanachak (Shamhan), located 20 km west of Jammu along the Chenab basin. The local jagirdar (feudal lord) was Mehta Bir Singh, an arrogant and tight-fisted nobleman under the Raja of Jammu.

Bir Singh held a vast tract of thorny, rocky, and utterly arid wasteland known as Kasba Shamhan (Jhiri), which no farmer in living memory had ever succeeded in cultivating. Bir Singh proposed a harsh agreement:

The Solemn Covenant: "If you clear this barren thorny waste, dig the channels, and coax grain from this cursed soil, you shall retain three-quarters (3/4th) of the entire harvest, and I, as landlord, shall receive only one-quarter (1/4th)."

Jitmal accepted the challenge in full faith of God. With blistered hands and untiring resolve, aided by Iso Megh and sustained by the divine presence of Bua Kodi, Jitmal toiled day and night, transforming the wilderness into golden loam.

Chapter 5 · Divine Grace & The Bumper Harvest (1487 VS)

5. The Golden Ocean of Wheat at Shamhan5.

In Vikram Samvat 1487 (1430 CE), the heavens showered unprecedented blessings upon Shamhan. Rains fell precisely when needed, no pests touched the crops, and every ear of wheat hung heavy with lustrous grains.

When harvest time arrived, the yield was so monumental that people from twenty surrounding villages gathered in awe. A gigantic mountain of threshed wheat—gleaming like pure gold—rose upon the threshing floor (khaliyaan). News reached Mehta Bir Singh in his manor that the Brahmin had produced a crop beyond anyone's wildest imagination.

Chapter 6 · Treachery & Defiance (1487 VS)

6. The Feudal Lord's Perjury & The Stand for Righteousness6.

Overcome by insatiable avarice, Mehta Bir Singh arrived at the threshing field flanked by armed horsemen and henchmen (including Ramu, Malu, and Ghughu). Shamelessly breaking his sacred pledge, Bir Singh barked:

The Feudal Decree: "A peasant Brahmin has no right to such wealth! You shall take only one-quarter (1/4th) for your labor. The remaining three-quarters (3/4th) belongs to my royal granary. Load the carts at once!"

Jitmal stood resolute before the oppressor. He reminded Bir Singh of the solemn agreement made before the gods, of the sweat that turned barren rock into bread, and warned him of the cosmic ruin that befalls rulers who rob the honest laborer:

Baba Jitto Ji's Defiance: "Mehta! You covet the grain born of my sacred sweat. But know this: you shall never consume this wheat in peace. If you take this grain unjustly, you shall swallow raw flesh and blood, and your lineage shall wither from the earth!"

Chapter 7 · The Supreme Sacrifice (Balidan) (1487 VS)

7. The Immortal Dagger on the Threshing Heap7.

Seeing that moral appeals fell on deaf ears and that the feudal lord was determined to plunder the crop by brute force, Jitmal resolved to make the ultimate sacrifice to awaken humanity and strike an eternal blow against tyranny.

He climbed atop the majestic heap of threshed wheat. Reaching into his waistcloth, he drew the very dagger (katar) that his father Roop Chand had carried sixty years earlier in the Shivalaya—fulfilling Lord Shiva's ancient prophecy. With blazing conviction, he uttered the immortal words that have echoed through the hills for six centuries:

("Do not devour dry wheat, O Mehta! Behold, I soak it in my fresh blood and soul! You have crushed the four pillars of Dharma—Truth, Austerity, Purity, and Compassion!")

With supreme poise, Jitmal plunged the dagger deep into his chest. His sacred blood poured over the golden grain, forever sanctifying the harvest and sealing the doom of the oppressors. It was the sacred day of Kartik Purnima, Vikram Samvat 1487.

Chapter 8 · The Agni-Pravesh (Sati) of Bua Kodi

8. The Yogic Flame & The Ascension of Dasham Shakti8.

When news reached little 5-year-old Bua Kodi at their cottage, she displayed no mundane childish grief. As the incarnation of Goddess Vaishnavi, she knew her five-year earthly tenure had concluded.

Dressed in radiant saffron, holding a bowl of sacred water, she walked with divine majesty to the threshing field. She gazed upon her father's mortal form resting upon the sanctified grain heap. Ordering a funeral pyre to be prepared, she mounted the pyre beside her father. Without any worldly flint or firebrand, divine yogic flames erupted spontaneously from her being, consuming both mortal bodies in a radiant column of light that ascended straight into the heavens.

Chapter 9 · Divine Curse & Downfall of Oppressors

9. The Bitter Curse & The Annihilation of Bir Singh's Lineage9.

Terrified yet unrepentant, Mehta Bir Singh had ordered the blood-soaked wheat loaded onto bullock carts and locked into his family granaries. But the curse of the martyred saint manifested swiftly.

Whoever ate bread made from that wheat began vomiting blood. Horrendous afflictions, skin diseases, and madness struck Bir Singh's household. His sons and kinsmen perished one after another in agony. Bir Singh himself was consumed by terrible leprosy and madness, eventually drowning himself in the waters of the Chenab.

The Everlasting Atonement: To this day, descendants of Mehta Bir Singh's clan (certain Mehta/Chib families of the region) travel to Jhiri to bow their heads, seek forgiveness, and partake of the sacred soil (Matti) at Bawa Da Talab to ward off ancestral affliction.

Chapter 10 · Sacred Jhiri Shrine, Samadhi & Annual Mela

10. The Eternal Samadhi Shrine & The Annual Fair10.

Following the divine ascension, two wealthy merchant brothers from Sialkot named Suddhu and Buddhu, who had been miraculously healed by invoking Baba Jitto Ji in a dream, erected the original stone Samadhi shrine upon the very spot where the supreme sacrifice occurred.

The spiritual custody of the shrine was consecrated upon Goswami Nathu Shah Ji of Kanachak, inaugurating the sacred hereditary lineage of Goswami Mahants that presides over Shri Bua Bawa Sthan, Jhiri to this day.

Every year on Kartik Purnima, over one million pilgrims from Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and across India gather at Jhiri. They take the pre-dawn holy dip at Bawa Da Talab, offer freshly harvested grains at the Samadhi, and honor the supreme martyrs of truth, dignity, and farmers' rights.
