How to Reach Jhiri Mela
By Air
The nearest airport is Jammu Airport (Satwari, IXJ), about 24 km from Jhiri. Prepaid taxis and shuttle buses are available outside the terminal. From Delhi and other major cities, you can fly into Jammu and reach the shrine in under two hours, even with festival traffic.
By Train
Jammu Tawi (JAT) is the nearest railway station, about 22 km away. It has direct express trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Amritsar and other major cities. Trains to Jammu fill up fast around Kartik Purnima, so book early and keep Tatkal as a backup. Read our guide: How to Book Fast Train Tickets for Jhiri Mela 2026.
By Road: Two Main Routes from Jammu
Route 1 – Via Canal Road and Marh (about 20 km, 35–45 minutes). This is the most popular and scenic route. Jammu City (Jewel Chowk) → Canal Road → Talab Tillo → Marh Morh → Gajansoo → Shamachak → Jhiri Shrine.
Route 2 – Via NH-144 Akhnoor Highway (about 24 km, 40–50 minutes). Jammu City → Paloura → Muthi → Domana → Purkhoo → Mishriwala Bypass / Kangrail → Jhiri. This wider road helps you avoid some city traffic.
By Bus and Festival Shuttles
During the mela, JKRTC runs special festival buses from Jammu Tawi Railway Station, the General Bus Stand and Jewel Chowk straight to the Jhiri grounds, as per the information published on the Jhiri Mela portal. Buses are announced to run around the clock at roughly 15-minute intervals. For most pilgrims without their own vehicle, this is the easiest and cheapest option.
By Cab or Auto
Local taxi unions, Ola and Uber operate from Jammu city to the designated parking area at Jhiri. On Kartik Purnima, expect heavy traffic and higher fares, and agree on the fare before you start.
Parking
If you drive, large parking zones are set up near Gajansoo Morh and Shamachak and managed by J&K Traffic Police. Park where directed and walk the last stretch with the crowd. It is faster than trying to get closer.
Where to Stay Near Jhiri Mela
Jhiri is a village, and the mela ground is far from big hotel clusters. Most pilgrims stay in Jammu city and travel out each day. Here is how the options compare.
1. Near Jammu Tawi Railway Station and Bus Stand
Best for train travellers, families, and anyone arriving or leaving at odd hours. You will find budget hotels, guest houses and mid-range stays here. It is also the pickup point for the mela shuttles, so you can go to Jhiri without hiring a cab.
2. Residency Road, Gandhi Nagar and Trikuta Nagar
Best for comfort and better dining. These are the main hotel and restaurant areas of Jammu, a good fit if you want a quieter, more comfortable base. Cabs to Jhiri are easy to find.
3. Canal Road and Talab Tillo Side
Best for shorter travel time. These areas lie on Route 1, so you save time on the morning drive to Jhiri.
4. Dharamshalas, Guest Houses and Temple-Linked Stays
Best for budget travellers and groups. Jammu has many dharamshalas and pilgrim guest houses, and some are close to the Raghunath Temple area. Facilities are usually simple but clean and affordable. Confirm availability directly with the management, because this season is busy.
5. Community Services at the Mela Ground
Langar halls run round the clock for free meals, and the grounds have toilet blocks, medical camps and a police control room. These are not a place to sleep, but they make a day trip easy.
Smart Booking Tips
Book 3–4 weeks ahead. Kartik Purnima, winter tourism and weddings overlap, so rooms in Jammu fill quickly.
Ask about check-in times. If you plan a 4 AM bath on 24 November, you need a hotel that allows early exits and late returns.
Check the cancellation policy while the dates are still tentative.
Pick a base on your route. A hotel on Canal Road or near Jewel Chowk will save you time on the way.
Best Time to Visit and Travel Tips
Go early. 4:00–8:00 AM is best for the holy dip and a calmer darshan. Late morning to afternoon (about 11 AM–4 PM) is the peak crowd period.
Dress warm. Late November mornings and nights in Jammu are cold. Bring a dry change of clothes if you plan to bathe in the talab.
Carry cash. Mobile networks can get congested and slow down UPI payments at local stalls.
Respect the shrine. Do not use soap in the sacred pond and put waste only in bins.
Keep children and elders close. Lost-and-found booths and police help points are available on the grounds.
What to Experience Once You Arrive
Take a holy dip at Bawa Da Talab, offer prayers at the Samadhi, and eat langar prasad with everyone else. If you can stay a few days, watch the traditional Vishal Dangal, listen to Dogri folk Kaarkaan sung on the sarangi, and visit the craft and farmers’ market. Do not miss the evening Deepdaan, when diyas are set afloat on the pond. Try the local food too: read Traditional Food and Sweets You Must Try at Jhiri Mela.
